Standard Mauritius VAT is 15%. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt — check your specific case with the MRA.
This is an estimate only. It uses a simplified progressive PAYE model with the standard individual annual exemption threshold and CSG at 1.5% / 3%. It ignores allowances, reliefs (dependants, pension, medical, etc.), NSF and Solidarity Levy. Rates and thresholds change each Budget — always confirm with the MRA or your accountant.
A quick, honest primer — enough to price correctly and read an invoice with confidence. It is not tax advice; the MRA is the final word.
Value Added Tax is a consumption tax charged on most goods and services at a standard rate of 15%. If you are VAT-registered, you add it to your prices, collect it from your customers, and pass it on to the MRA.
If your price is exclusive of VAT, you add 15% to reach the gross. If a price already includes VAT, you remove it by dividing — not by subtracting 15%. That is the mistake this tool exists to stop.
gross = net × 1.15 net = gross ÷ 1.15 VAT = gross − netThe VAT you charge customers is output VAT. The VAT you pay suppliers is input VAT. On your return you generally remit the difference — so clean records of both sides directly affect your cash.
Whether you must register depends on your turnover and activity. If you are close to the threshold or unsure of your category, confirm with the MRA or your accountant before you rely on any figure.
Three everyday cases, done both ways — so the maths is never a mystery on your invoice.
Your price is exclusive of VAT. You add 15% to reach what the customer pays.
The total already includes VAT. Divide by 1.15 to find the net — never subtract 15%.
Subtracting 15% from a VAT-inclusive Rs 2,300 gives Rs 1,955 — wrong. The correct net is Rs 2,000. The gap grows with the amount.

Yes — at the standard 15% rate the VAT and net figures are computed exactly, with proper division for VAT-inclusive amounts. The only rounding is to two decimals for display. If your item is zero-rated or exempt, the 15% assumption won't apply — confirm your category with the MRA.
Divide the VAT-inclusive total by 1.15 to get the net, then subtract the net from the total to get the VAT. Do not simply take 15% off the total — that gives the wrong answer. Switch the calculator to "Incl. VAT — remove 15%" and it does this for you.
No. The whole calculator runs client-side in your browser. There is no account, no upload, no tracking of the numbers you enter, and it keeps working even offline once the page has loaded.
It's a clearly-labelled estimate. It applies a simplified progressive PAYE model with the standard individual annual exemption and CSG at 1.5% / 3%. It deliberately ignores personal allowances, reliefs (dependants, pension, medical), NSF and the Solidarity Levy. Use it as a quick sanity-check, then confirm exact figures with the MRA or your accountant.
VAT has been 15% for some time, but PAYE thresholds and bands are revised in the national Budget. We keep this tool aligned with the standard rates in use. For anything you file, always verify against current MRA guidance.
